Flip is Here!

To be honest, this is too beginnerish for us; maybe the Flip2 with fpv capabilities is the one to wait for. I see too many things in Flip1 that look "old" and somewhat dated as if a better version is already in the works. Don't get me wrong, the drone is nice but it just looks a bit too plain. Size and 2GB and no PFV and sensors for example. We'll have our answer if a Mini 5 launches in a few months. :)
I have to admit the Flip looks like something that was released 20 years ago. Boxy look with not much for curves on the body.

I think it's a fun design, and it has great features. I just don't know why someone would buy one if they already have a solid camera drone (Mavic 2 or 3, or Air 3/3S, or Mini Pro 4). The Avata2 and Neo are ways for people with camera drones to try something new.

The body of it reminds me a lot of my old Spark with the front obstacle avoidance.

I think if you don't already have a NEO or a Mini 3 or 4 then it will be a pretty enticing drone especially if you are looking for a sub 250g drone. I know if I didn't already have a NEO and my Mini 3 Pro I would likely have hit the buy button.

It’s why the Neo and now the Flip exist - autonomous mode.

Those other drones are more on the pro side. This a new market for something simple and fun for the average user.

Anyone else decide to pull the trigger on a Flip?

If I didn’t already have a NEO or Mini 3 Pro then I definitely would.

I might?

I've been a fan of prop guards since the SPARK and have purchased them for the MA2 as well.

Although I rarely use them, it's nice to have the protection provided by the NEO and the FLIP already to go.

No more fumbling around with extra bits of stuff.

My NEO suffered a couple of incidents and is flying well because of the extra protection to the props.

The camera gimbal is fragile and it needs protection too.

DJI should design a bubble or cage that won't distort the image quality of the camera to protect the camera assembly.

I think the original mavic had a cover that allowed full movement while attached.

With the large folding props and small hinge the Flip seems to be more fragile than the NEO.

In one video review I watched the guy talked about how you can’t remove the prop guards if they get damaged. You would have to send the whole drone in for repair.

Will you be getting one?

It's listed on DJIs site now. Prices seem reasonable for what you get - USD$419 for Flip/RC-N3, $579 Flip/RC2, $699 FMC. It seems to be positioned between the NEO and the Mini 4 since it has features from both drones.

One thing I noted is that goggles are not noted in the control methods so I am wondering if it will not be compatible with FPV. This seems strange since I believe the Mini 4 can be controlled via goggles.

Chris

Maybe, if the tests videos prove it to be worthy.

There are lots of YouTube videos out now from influencers . If you don’t already have a NEO or a Mini 3 Pro or Mini 4 it might be a worthy purchase especially since it sits in the middle.

Chris

Way too fragile for FPV! It would die on the first battery.lol
It would be great if DJI would build more FPV style Drones BUT I am sure they make enough money on Air units (I have 6) that they can just leave the Drone building part to us! PLUS DJI wont let me tune the Drone and thats a deal breaker as far as FPV goes.

I think it's a little pricey to just go ahead and pull the trigger. If it were cheaper then perhaps. Something tells me the Flip 1 is like Avata 1....there's a nice more sensible upgrade version not far off. Don't get me wrong Avata 1 is a great FPV but clearly Avata 2 is much improved. For now, I think I'm going to wait to see if Flip 2 is right around the corner.
