Unfortunately, the Flip only subject tracks people at this point no matter what control device you use. It may struggle with getting a lock on a person riding an ATV/UTV.
For hiking, I would just use smartphone app and/or the “Quickshot” automatous flight options. That’s my plan for solo hikes and I want to share video/photos to social media.
If you are trying to decide which controller package to get (RC-N3 or RC2), I would go with the RC2 as you don't have to worry about connecting a phone to the controller. You still have the option to use phone control only for hikes etc.
I agree with Chris... Always use an RC if you can. Even if you just carry it as backup in your backpack, should you lose phone connection.
I myself would probably use my phone for this purpose, because I can use voice control. However, be careful not to get in some situation where you can't get closer to it to reconnect.
The RC in the backpack is a lot of insurance and peace of mind.
I agree with the other fellas about having an RC controller as a backup. Having the built in screen on the RC2 is nice so you don't have to worry about another device, like your phone, having a battery charge on top of the controller.
